Scottish Health Secretary pledges to protect NHS employees from compulsory redundancy

Nicola Sturgeon has sworn that no NHS employee will face compulsory redundancy ahead of sweeping cuts set to affect health workers across the country.

The Health Secretary made clear on the BBC’s Politics Show that it was ‘irresponsible’ to suggest that NHS workers were in the firing line over job cuts.

Ms Sturgeon went on to say:

“The NHS has a policy of no compulsory redundancies and that will continue to be the case.

“At the end of this SNP term of government there will be more people working in the NHS than was the case than when we took office.”

Despite the Health Secretary’s pledge to protect workers, NHS Lothian is expected to shed around 2,000 jobs while NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde unveiled plans to axe 1,252 posts by the end of 2011.

Overall, the BBC believes that 5,000 jobs could be a risk in Scotland.
